- Council statistics are in!
All Councils have to produce 'performance indicators' to monitor their success and performance. Some of the more interesting ones for 2000/2001 are:
- Percentage of total tonnage of household rubbish recycled: 6.31%
- Percentage of highways that are either of a high or acceptable standard of cleanliness: 84.35%
- Domestic burglaries for every 1,000 households: 18.56
- Violent crimes for every 1000 people: 22.18
- Of these, robberies for every 1000 people: 4.39
- Vehicle crimes for every 1000 people: 33.29
- Number of school pupils permanently excluded for every 1000 pupils: Primary Schools: 0.17, Secondary Schools: 1.28
- No. of visits by members of the public made to the Council's libraris, for ech resident: 8.58
- No of books and other items issued by the Council's libraries, for each resident: 8.58
- Cost of maintaining roads (worked out for every 100km travelled by a vehicle on principle roads: £0.31

- Market trader accused of selling fruit + veg in Pounds and Ounces to go to High Court.
Thames Magistrates Court ordered a market trader from Woodford Green to pay £4,638 after being found guilty of selling fruit and vegetables in pounds and ounces instead of in kilos and grams, due to European Union directives. He will fight against this at the Royal Courts of Justice claiming that these metric rules are infringing cultural rights.

A 24 year old was found lying unconscious in Kings Avenue, Woodford Green. During an attack she suffered a blood clot which has affected her speech.

Two best friends from Beal High School are sharing a role in a national tour of Whistle Down the Wind, a West End production.

- Postman shot by airgun on rounds in Clayhall.
A postman was shot in the elbow with an airgun as he was doing his round in Rushden Gardens. He is in a lot of pain and cannot stop thinking about it, and is waiting for hospital test results to see if any nerves have been damaged. Deliveries in the area have been suspended until an enquiry has been completed, residents affected have been told to collect their mail from the sorting office. [Add your comment]
