    Christmas post deliveries are likely to be delayed because of a row about overtime. Post boxes are overflowing and some Christmas cards will not get delivered in time.
  • There has been a four-week crime busting operation in Ilford and Wanstead to catch street robbers and burglars in the act. This involved plain clothed policeman patrolling.
  • Four people facing charges over an attack outside the venue nightclub (allegedly) which left three men and with stab wounds reappeared before magistrates.
  • A 70-year-old widow was walking in Barkingside on December 9th when a robber pounced on her from behind fracturing her jaw and breaking her wrist.
  • The Shannon Centre had sold more than 100 Christmas Eve tickets for its nightclubs before realising they had not applied for a late licence!
  • The Samaritans are offering an all-day service on Christmas Day for people who want to talk to someone.
  • A Beal high school pupil has won a place with the National Children Orchestra playing the violin and will play in some of the country's top venues.
  • Pupils from Chadwell Heath Foundation School raised more than £800 to fund a party for pensioners.
  • Badly parked cars are causing problems for the fire service because the fire hydrants are being blocked.
  • Outline plans for a hospital to replace the ageing Whipps Cross have been unveiled.
  • The last Tube train out of the capital will leave at 11:45pm on Christmas Eve. No trains on Christmas Day.
  • Pupils at Woodbridge High School put on an afternoon of cabaret and the traditional festive dinners for pensioners as part of their commitment to the local community.
  • Unemployment in the borough has fallen by 356 people over the past three months. It is now 4.7 per cent of the borough's population compared to 5.1 per cent in the previous three months.
  • Pupils from Beal high school raised £7,000 in a sponsored walk around the school field in aid of various charities.
  • A 14-year-old girl was indecently assaulted by two men who followed her into newsagents in Ley Street
  • Children from Christchurch junior school and Woodlands infant school sang in the Exchange centre.

    It has been revealed that a pilot killed in the air also killing a 10 year old boy had changed his recorded flight path to fly over his house. The incident happened at North Weald airfield in April.
  • Jewellery store owner had armed raiders smash their way into his home to drive him to his shop in Ilford to steal £200,000 of jewellery.
  • A pupil from Park Hill Junior School won the Royal Mail nationwide 'young letter writing' competition and won his school £300.
  • Ford worker who suffered years of racial abuse while working at their Dagenham plant reached a settlement with the car giant. In 1995 the General Workers Union bosses called this the worst case of racial intimidation they had dealt with at a UK firm.
  • A big fireworks display marking the end of the year 2000 has been moved from a Hainault Forest country Park to Valentine's Park. The reason is because police were concerned because large events have not taken place at the venue before.
  • 400 metres of snakes Lane East became waterlogged while water board workers worked out how to turn the water off to a burst pipe.
  • Children at Christchurch Junior School raised £235 for cancer research when they held a talent night.
  • 70 pupils at Beal High School raised £385 for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund after holding a Stars in their Eyes the evening.
  • Third Redbridge and refugee Forum which provides services to refuges received £5,474 from a bank towards setting up the group.
  • Partnership formed between a Japanese school and Cranbrook Road School over the Internet.
  • Bosses of the Abridge Road Epping Forest Country Club (nightclub) face objections from councillors and police over the renewal of its licence for 2001.
  • £10,000 worth of leather jackets from a market stall holder stolen from a garage in Ilford.
  • A gang who boarded a bus threatened two teenage passengers with a knife and CS spray. Their money and mobile phones was stolen.

  • University and ex-Caterham High student, Sarah Canning, 20, died after a car collision in Chigwell. She will be sadly missed.
  • 15 year old girl was repeatedly raped. She was bundled into a car in Chingford and dropped off an hour later in Woodford Green.
  • Pair of scaffolders who hurled racist abuse at a cab driver and smashed up his cab and viciously attacked him were sentenced for just 3 months each.
  • Beal high school Radio XL goes on air for another 5 days to the borough on 1503MW on October 20.
  • Librarian sent to hospital following an argument with a member of the public over an Internet terminal.
